Dear all,
I recently installed ESXi 6.5 on local data store, I found that the file system is "VMFS 5". why not "VMFS 6"?
Kind regards
VMFS 5 and VMFS 6 can coexist. However, due to the changes done in VMFS 6 metadata structures to make it 4K aligned, you cannot inline/offline upgrade from VMFS5 to VMFS6.
You can leverage the new VMFS 6 capabilities by creating a new VMFS 6 datastore and provisioning new virtual machines to it or migrating the existing virtual machines from VMFS 5 datastore to VMFS 6 datastore.

It's indeed an interesting question, why VMware decided to use VMFS-5 for the datastore on the installation disk?
I don't think that they don't trust their own file system!? ![]()
Let's wait and see whether someone from VMware responds to your question who can clarify if this was made by intention, or whether it's an installation bug.

yes, I know VMFS 5 and VMFS 6 can coexist
but, why VMware decided to use VMFS-5 for the data store on ESXi 6.5 installation disk?
Thanks.
