VMware Workstation Pro on Ubuntu 20.04 can't find gcc 9.3.0

I have made a couple of attempts to install VMware Workstation on Ubuntu Budgie 20.04 and both systems have failed with complaints about not being able to find gcc 9.3.0.

I'm installing VMware using this and it runs without complaint:

VMware-Workstation-Full-7.1.6-744570.x86_64.bundle

But when I start vmware it complains that it can't find gcc 9.3.0 - this is what dpkg -l has to say on both systems.

ii gcc 4:9.3.0-1ubuntu2 amd64 GNU C compiler

ii gcc-10-base:i386 10.3.0-1ubuntu1~20.04 i386 GCC, the GNU Compiler Collection (base package)
ii gcc-9 9.3.0-17ubuntu1~20.04 amd64 GNU C compiler

ii libgcc-s1:i386 10.3.0-1ubuntu1~20.04 i386 GCC support library

Given that I've got the most recent Workstation and the most recent version of a very well supported Linux Distro, the lack of clear direction on this problem is completely ridiculous. There are complex posts about manually installing/compiling things and it isn't clear if they're complete solutions. This is unacceptable for two front line pieces of software - is there a patch? A clear, complete, official write up of how to resolve this?
