What's your approach to High Performance Disk I/O?

Say you had two brand new HP DL380 G7 Servers that come with the P410i Flash backed write controller & $5000 to spend on storage for each server, what would be your approach to I/O performance.  Redundancy is a low priority, speed is top priority. Suggestions?

i just buy as much SAS disk as possible and configure RAID0 (there is no redundancy at all) but the wiser choice would be going for RAID10 for better read and write operations. if you disk requirement is low, you might want to look into SSDs ..

Looks like you could put 16x 72GB 15K SAS drives in a RAID 0.  That would be around $5000 per server.

I have read that adding the SAS expander (to use 16 disks instead of 😎 decreases I/O performance...

Raid 0 would probably be pushing it, RAID 5 would be more likely.

As for SSDs, are there any decent SAS SSDs that are affordable?

do you have access to the IOPS needs? if it's existing server you can turn on perfmon. from there you can make a more accurate purchase decision on the disk type, raid type .. and most probably lesser cost ..
