VM to VM communication

Hi,

Is VM to VM communication possible on two different hosts?

If yes, then how is this possible?

If no, then why?

Thanks in advance!

Hi. Possible? Yes, it will "come outside", meaning that it will use the physical switches/routers/etc. To keep it simple just use the dVswitch and then you can configure specific network configurations for both vm's like private vlans etc.

Hi SankyArora,

Prior to vSphere 5.1 the VMCI framework could provide direct VM to VM communication bypassing the vNetworking layer as outlined in this KB article.

Configuring a Virtual Machine Communication Interface on a vSphere ESX host

This was however limited to VMs running on the same host. There was no facility to traverse hosts using VMCI. The network layer was always required.

Since vSphere 5.1 VMCI has been deprecated and all VM to VM communication must pass over the network layer as highlighted in the most recent Release Notes.

Cheers,

Rodney
