Sorry to reopen an old question but we have been experiencing some severe issues with several clients that use VMware and SQL Server. We utilise SQL Server 2005 to perform some quite large bulk processing, regardless of what version/hardware or SAN they the problem is the same the recurring theme is VMware, this problem cannot be duplicated on physical hardware.
The sympton is simple and intermittent - certain processes are either suspended or run as background processes in SQL like they are awaiting resource, processor is 50% - 100%, memory is maxed out and disk IO is very low down to a few bytes a second this does lead us to believe the disks are an issue however looking at the SAN itself it is just sat waiting.
As a bench mark a task that takes 50 seconds to complete on a physical machine took 10 hours on a virtual machine of the exact same spec, as previously it is not consistent and some process have taken minutes then for no reason exploded to 15 hours then back down to a few minutes, in this particular case we had a dedicated resource pool and raw mappings to the virtual sql box.
Is anyone able to shed any light on this problem or experienced anything similiar?
