Citrix on vSphere along side other servers

Hi,

I have read a lot about running Citrix on vSphere on this forum, but can't find answer to this one question.

Is it possible to run a Citrix server along side other vm servers on same host? Ex. A SQL, App server and a Citrix server on one host?

It's a new setup, so I have no benchmark to go out from, but it will only be about 20 users and they will run 1-3 applications from the server. In time it will grow, but then I can take action from there.

Another question, is it possible to run both license server and webinterface from a vm-server?

First of all, I assume you are talking about ESX(i) 4.0 as the VMware platform.

I don't see any problems with this. I installed tons of XenApp5 systems on ESXi 4 without issues.

You can run almost every server workload on ESX(i). Just create VM's in ESX(i) to separate functions as you would do it with physical systems.

That's the point. It really depends on the host hardware and the workload.

Don't forget to think of a backup/recovery concept!!!

Also don't forget, if the host hardware fails you will loose multiple servers.

If you are talking about XenDesktop and XenApp then should be able to run them on vSphere.

I am running both the Citrix License server and Web Interface on VM's with no problems. In fact Citrix has announced that Access Gateway will be available as a virtual appliance. Citrix Netscaler is already offered as a virtual appliance.

Yes, technically you can run XenApp servers on ESX and mix them with other VMs. However, for best performance the project Virtual Reality Check (google is your friend) gives the advice to run XenApp VMs on their own cores (vCPU's) and not share that core with other VMs.

Depending on the number of ESX hosts, you might want to designate some of them to only run XenApp VMs.

Would it be fair to say vSphere is just the "launch" name for the different ESX 4.0 suites? Sorry, pretty new to this.

a.p.: Is XenApp5 the new name for citrix presentaiton server?
