do we need to keep the same IP subnet for the protected & recovery sites

Hello,

For SRM 5.0 do we need to retain the same IP subnet for the protected & recovery sites ?. Can we have different IP's for the protected & recovered VM's ?

You don't need to have the same ip-adresses, you can in the failover process re-ip the virtual machines.

In SRM 5 you can use IP customisation to change the network settings of the server when it recovers on the destination site.

This is dependant on up to date VMtools being installed and can be done by either individually assigning the new settings or using the batch IP customiser tool if you have lots of servers.

Whether this will work for you or not is dependant on the applications that you have running on the servers you wish to change the IP addresses for, most well written applications will continue to work without issue, however there are some rogue, less well written applications that may have issues with changing of IP addresses due to hard coding or licensing conditions being tied to the IP.  Testing is the prudent path if you are concerned about this.

So the short answer is no you do not need to retain the same subnet for the VMs when you failover.

and yes you can have different IP's for the protected and recovered VM's.

It's even an automated process.Smiley Happy
