What is your version of vCenter and SRM?

-Edit: I now see your guest O/S is Solaris, not Linux. No documentation in front of me right now but I only recall 4 flavours of Linux being supported and Solaris is not Linux.

This is a tough one to track but the SRM compatibility matrix (http://www.vmware.com/pdf/srm_compat_matrix_4_0.pdf) says that all Guest OS supported for IP customization by vSphere are supported by SRM. Makes sense, no? The online vSphere Compatibility Guide does not outline customization support (http://www.vmware.com/resources/compatibility/search.php?deviceCategory=software).

What I do see in the vSphere compatibility matix (http://www.vmware.com/pdf/vsphere4/r40/vsp_compatibility_matrix.pdf) starting page 15 is a column for "Guest OS Cust." support. Solaris is not listed as a supported guest OS for IP customization.

Well, a script can be executed from SRM but PowerCLI itself if not going to do you a lot of good. It can still be done though since almost anything in a UNIX machine can be scripted. Write a shell/perl script(s) to make all of your required file modifications, kick off that script remotely via perl installed on the vCenter/SRM server.
