Some light on SRM configuration + error configuring arrays

Hello everyone,

I'm facing some errors configuring disks arrays SRM. Basically I have two sites, one has an EMC Clariion CX3-20C and the other has a CX3-10C both using Mirror View replicating from the protected site to the recovery site only. I have managed to configure both systems on the vCenter at the protected site and here appears my doubts... do I need to configure disks arrays at the recovery vCenter?.

I have been trying to do this for the last 2 days and always finishes with the message "Error occurred"

Reviewing the log files the last lines that appears are:

=================================================================

Are the replicated volumes presented to the host on the recovery side? Can you give the exact error you get while doing the step?

Hi Duncan,

The replicated Luns are not presented yet to the hosts on the recovery site... is this a requirement for the configuration of the arrays?

The message "Error Occurred" appears when I try to add the storage array of the recovery site (right after the configuration of the storage array of the protected site) and the exact error that I got is "Error Occurred"... just that without any other information. The same steps has been taken at the vCenter at the protected site without any error.

Thanks again.

Hi Nicolas

If this is your first I install and you are seeing the error on entering recovery array information (2nd screen of array config wizard) then usually what this means is that you have not yet installed the SRA for your storage at your second site yet (as you are using mirrorview you need solutions enabler instaler there as well along side the SRA).

So my first suggestion would be login to the SRM server at the recovery site and verify you have at least installed those two bits of software alongside SRM (EMC SRA + EMC SE).

Cheers

I would advise start reading the Mirrorview SRA Documentation. It holds a complete description of all the steps needed to get this running. As Lee said you will need to install the SRA at both sites but you will also need to setup replication / presentation a certain way.

If it doesn't work, post the latest log file as an attachment.

Hello, I managed to configure the storage following EMC's documents but it doesn't work at all. Right now I'm thinking that the configuration that my customer has acquired is not supported. Basically he has one CX3-20 (fc) and on the other side one CX3-10 (ISCSI).

When I test the Recovery Plans I get the error "Array with key '50:06:01:60:c1:E0:7F:93:00:00:00:00:00:00:00:00' not found". Done some research and found other thread here that states that for every replicated LUN is required that it belongs to a "consistency Group" I have created the consistency groups and added the luns to them but the problem remains.

Reading the Site Recovery Manager Administrator Guide it clearly says that a green checkmark should be present when the arrays are added... in my case there is no green check mark and I can't find out what's going on here.

Any ideas?

Hi Nicolas

I am writing this as an EMC employee

Can you confirm that MirrorView is set up and working?

Have you looked at the MirroView configuration outside of the SRM environment and tested it?

Have you configured the snapshots with SnapView using the correct naming convention VMWARE_SRM_SNAP?

When you go into the CLARiiON do you see in the remote mirror section that the MirrorView configuration is working as expected - i.e. that you have a fully sychronised MirroView Secondary LUN configured on the Recovery Site array as part of the MirroView relationship with the MirroView Source LUN on the Protected Site

I was a little concerned to see the talk of FC at one site and iSCSI at the other?

I take it that this relates to the host connectivity and not trying to run MirrorView via FC from one array into iSCSI on the other array

When configuring MirrorView one must choose to use either iSCSI or FC?

I take it when you do the array discovery on the protection site that it discovers the CX3-20 and recognises the LUNs you have configured with MirrorView? I.e. if you have 5 LUNs configured as MirrorView Sources - do you see the number 5 in the SRM array configuration dialogue box

You then click NEXT and move onto the recovery site configuration window, choose the CLARiiON SRA and enter the SPA and SPB IP addresses as well as the account to access the CLARiiON - does SRM go off and discover the Recovery Site Array successfully.

If following that step the SRA communication with SRM is successful it should allow SRM to discover both Arrays, any MirrorView sessions, the protected site MirrorView Source LUN(s) and the Snap(s) as presented to the Protected Site ESX Host and configured with a VMFS partition and Virtual Machine as well as discovering the MirroView Target LUN(s) and their respective Snap(s) presented to the Recovery Site ESX Hosts (but having not tried to create a VMFS partition on that Recovery Site MirrorView Target LUN(s) as these should be Read-Only)

As Lee has already enquired, I take it that you have the SRA and EMC solutions Enabler of the correct version installed on both the Protection and Recovery SRM servers?

If you could send some screenshots of the CLARiiON showing how it is configured that would be helpful
