SharePoint 2010 DR solution using Site Recovery Manager tool.

Hello Team,

I am from SharePoint team. Currently we are working on DR solution for SharePoint 2010 platform which is hosted on VM's and planning to use SRM tool for LUN level replication of the environment from Primary to Secondary Data Centre. Currently the plan is to use SRM for front end and for DB, use the SQL Native Asynchronous DB mirroing. The reason for this approach is considering that SRM could not able to handle DB server replication properly which is an assumption but not sure.

Hence we would like to put forward the following question related to SRM tool usage for DB servers. Please provide a recommendation at the earliest. Thank You!

1) Can we include DB servers as well in the SRM based replication? If yes, how can we take care of "Single Point of failure scenario (SPOC)"?

SPOC: If the database in the Primary DC is corrupted for some reason there are fair chances that the same gets propograted to Secondary DC.

Hi!

SRM isn't a replication solution (so your assumption about SRM not being able to handle DB server replication properly is incorrect). It automates and orchestrates replication solutions (either or both array-based replication (LUN level) using a SRA (storage replication adaptor) or vSphere replication(VM level)). If your array based replication solution can support replicating SQL to your requirements then you are set (some solutions support agent based VSS and more to ensure consistency, etc). vSphere replication supports VSS guest OS quiecing so that may be sufficient? VR also supports MPIT (multiple point in time) backups, giving you the ability to roll-back as needed.

SRM has the ability to interoperate with other systems using scripts run from the SRM server. The downside to not including everything in SRM that could be is that it makes your recovery plan more complicated and also much harder to test non-disruptively.

Your question about the primary DC being corrupted would depend on your replication solution and the ability to roll-back to a previous point in time. There are options for array based replication like EMC Recoverpoint as well as vSphere replication which supports MPIT.

Does this answer your questions?
