SRM5.0 need VPN tunnel or not ?

     Now I have a discussion about  that when SRM connect site to site  ，the network environment need VPN tunnel.

     And I want to know if I do not need VPN tunnel，the SRM connection can be built？

     Please help me provide  something about this

It all depends on the site to site connection but by itself SRM does not need a VPN connection

But when I built SRM 5.0 connection site to site.

Step 1, built site to site connection

I found that site to site connection did not be built.

first,I used the public IP bulit the connection.It is OK.

until the last step，site to site did not Recognition to each other.and the IP address showed the private IP ,not public IP.

So,one site can bot recongnition the pravite IP of the  other site.
