SRM & vCenter on same server

I have two relatively small sites (<20 VMs per site).

Both sites have their own vCenter installation on a VM.

I have decided to implement SRM.

Although not recommended for larger production sites - are there any disadvantages to installing SRM on the same VM as SRM in smaller environments?

It is fully supported and I can't find any reason to justify installing a separate VM per site purely to host SRM.

Hi there,

It is what we do - have around 150 VMs that we failover regularly. When I say regularly we have a DR exercise every 6 months where we fail production to our secondary site are run there for a week then failback.

As long as the VM is sized correctly don't see any reason why you wouldn't do it - both are required for the exercise so seems to be one less moving piece in the equation. I can imagine if you have a truly massive site then having a separate server for SRM would be good but at our sizes...

Kind regards.

Hi,

As you mentioned yourself, it is fully supported and I've done this several times for small deployments. SRM will not interfere with your vCenter Server operations much as it will only be used in case of a disaster recovery or a planned migration.

Size the vCenter Server virtual machine accordingly and you should be fine.

One last thing to consider is if you will be using an external or the embedded (vPostgreSQL) database for SRM.

Cheers!
