SRM and EMC Mirrorview/S recovery plan failed

Hello!

I have 2 servers, one with ESX 3.5 fU1 Foundation as protected site server and other ESX 3.5 U3 in evaluation mode on recovery site.

Clariion CX4-120 with FLARE 4.29 on both sites with fibre mirror conection enabled.

Virtual Center 2.5.0 (evaluation mode), SRM 1.0.1 (evaluation mode) and EMC MirrorView SRA 1.4.0.15 are installed on both servers.

I have virtual machine on Mirrorview/s replicated LUN and SRM connection, array managers, inventory mappings and protection group configured on protected site.

Recovery plan is configured on recovery site and when this plan is testing or running - error occured (error on picture and log attached).

Can you help me? May be some steps are missing.....hm....

Hi Veli,

It would also appear from the logs that you do not have any consistency groups created either. This is also a requirement with the Mirrorview SRA (well it used to be, not sure about the new SRA).

It might be worth looking at a doc I wrote on how to set up the Clariion & Mirrorview for SRM.

You can find it here:- http://viops.vmware.com/home/docs/DOC-1227

Hi,

EMC ClarIIon array needs to have the remote (and local) SNAPS LUN (for SRM testing) with a special syntax inside them

e.g, "VMWARE_SRM_SNAP"

..liase with your EMC tech supporter or look for clariion + site recovery manager at EMC powerlink

also, if you installed the latest clarIIon SRA, you get a free amazing bonus, an EMC software called Mirrorview Insight Viewer", this Graphical tool shows you if your luns have been created properly, if they are being replicated and it also gives you an automated SRM FAILBACK!!

thanks for your reply.

If I correctly understand you, I must configure Snapview to my plan succeded?

Also I have Mirrorview Insight for Vmware v 1.4.0.15 and everything seems to be OK in this tool (on screenshot).

Any suggestions?

Hi Cormac

Consistency Groups are no longer a requirment - but if you do not use them we have seen some issues where if you want to failback a configuration and failing it over for real (as opposed to using the test method) the mirror may go into a fractured / waiting on admin state that will require often a full sync before you can fail back

This has not been observed if consistency groups are used

I think it may be something to do with the new fail-back functionality that is in the newer EMC Mirrorview SRA Vali.

I'm sure Alex will be able to chime in and confirm if that is indeed the case.

The document I wrote was for an earlier version of the SRA which did not include the fail-back functionality.

Hi

Snapview is the local replication functionality of the CLARiiON Navipshere software stack that gives you the ability to create the snapshots leveraged to carry out test recovery plans.

It allows you to create point in time copy on first write snapshots and full volume clones of production volumes

In order to successfully run 'test plans' on both the protected site (following a full failover to the recovery site in the event that you then want to test your condigration prior to failing back) and recovery site, you needs snaps configured with the default VMWARE_SRM_SNAP segment in the snap name mapped to the ESX hosts (i,e in the same storage group as the production volumes with the relevant ESX hosts)

It may be that SnapView was already configured by your adminstrator - but your test plans (at least) will fail if you do not have the proper snaps configured as the SRA looks for them when running the 'test plan'
