SRM Upgrade

I’m wishing to upgrade from SRM 5.01 to 5.1.1. My VC is
currently 5.01 and will also be going to 5.1.1.

I note from the product interoperability matrix that Vcenter
5.0 will only support SRM 5.0, 5.0.1 & 5.0.2 so somethings going to break
one way or another as if I upgrade VCenter first to 5.1.1 the that only works
with SRM 5.1 & 5.1.1.

So the question is, do I upgrade VC to 5.1.1 first then
upgrade SRM to 5.1 and then be able to upgrade it to 5.1.1 immediately after (SRM
cant go from 5.0.1 straight to 5.1.1 but it can go to 5.1) or do I upgrade SRM
first to 5.1 then upgrade the VCenter? I’m thinking the latter for it means at
no point should SRM have an issue with the installed version of the Vcenter.

Anyone see a flaw with this?

You are correct that you cannot upgrade from SRM 5.0.1 to SRM 5.1.1 directly. However, upgrading from SRM 5.0.2 to 5.1.1 is supported. The VMware Site Recovery Manager 5.1.1 Release Notes state that 5.0.2 to 5.1.1 is a supported upgrade path. The VMware Product Interoperability Matrixes did not list 5.0.2 to 5.1.1 as a supported upgrade path, but this was an oversight that we have now corrected.

The SRM installer needs to connect to the same x.x version as vCenter Server during upgrade, namely the SRM 5.0.2 installer needs to connect to a vCenter Server 5.0.x instance and the SRM 5.1.1 installer needs to connect to a vCenter Server 5.1.x instance. So the order in which you upgrade SRM and vCenter Server is important.

You have two alternative routes to upgrade SRM from 5.0.1 to 5.1.1:

  • Upgrade via SRM 5.0.2:
    1. Upgrade SRM from 5.0.1 to 5.0.2
    2. Upgrade vCenter Server from 5.0u1 to 5.1u1
    3. Upgrade SRM from 5.0.2 to 5.1.1

  • Upgrade via SRM 5.1:
    1. Upgrade vCenter Server from 5.0u1 to 5.1u1.
    2. Upgrade SRM from 5.0.1 to 5.1.
    3. Upgrade SRM from 5.1 to 5.1.1

Either route is supported.

Best regards,

Stuart
