SRM Licensing

How is SRM licensed? I'm planning on an implementation with 4 ESX hosts, each with dual quadcore processors. One of the hosts will be used at the secondary site, and I plan to use SRM. I thought that I'd have to purchase a 2 socket license for SRM if I only planned to recover my primary site to my secondary site -- one direction. Is this true? Or, will I need an 8 socket license?

Ben,

The basics of licensing for SRM are explained here: http://www.vmware.com/products/srm/faqs.html

Thanks,

Hi,

Check this link

According to the above link:

>What are the licensing requirements for VMware vCenter Site Recovery Manager?

VMware vCenter Site Recovery Manager is licensed per-CPU for ESX hosts that are running virtual machines, which are protected by VMware Site Recovery Manager.

Single-direction failover. Requires licenses for 2 vCenter management servers, 10-CPU VMware vSphere, and 6-CPU Site Recovery Manager.

Bi-directional failover. Requires licenses for 2 vCenter management servers, 10-CPU VMware vSphere, and 10-CPU Site Recovery Manager.

Thanks for the reply.

The URL clearly states the licensing model - which is exactly what I was after.

Regards,

Darren.

Just to play devils advocate here...

Assuming the situation above where 10 CPU SRM licenses are required - what happens if there are insufficient licenses to cover all ESX hosts actively hosting protected VMs? Can you still create a Protection Group with a licensing shortfall?

Hi, isn't the new version, per VM Licensing? so the SRM Licensing shouldn't have anything to do with CPU.

Site Recovery Manager 5 licensed using the per VM model?

Yes. Site Recovery Manager 5 is sold based on the new per VM pricing model.

Hi,

the question was asked in Feb 2010. At that time SRM5 (and even per VM licensing model) haven't exist yet...

Michael.
