I have a new setup ,esxi 5.x with 30 VMs in primary site and 25 vms in secondary site .we use hitachi async replication and planning for SRM .

Do we need seperate license for SRM

I have one vcentre server in each site , do we require seperate server for SRM in each site or any vm can be utilized .

what is the best practise for SRM

Regards,

First step is take some time and review the SRM documentation - http://www.vmware.com/support/pubs/srm_pubs.html

SRM does had its own license - http://www.vmware.com/products/site-recovery-manager/pricing.html

You can use the existing vCenter servers to support SRM -

You will need to install an instance of SRM on each side, associated to the vCenter Servers on each side. Once you have done that, each SRM instance will be known as a vCenter solution and hence be a license-able asset inside each vCenter. There are two ways to go about this:

1. If the vCenter Servers are configured in Linked Mode you can enter in a single SRM license key and assign it to both SRM assets. this way either side can draw upon the same number of licenses until you have maxed out you SRM license between the two sides.

2. If the vCenter Servers are not in Linked Mode you can use the license portal in your MyVMware account to split your single SRM license into two licenses with the appropriate number of VM's for each side.

SRM is a separately licensed product so you will need to purchase the number of VM licenses you wish to protect.
