No VMs appear in the Create Protection Group Wizard

Hi ,

I want to test a recovery plan and I have everything (hopefully) set up correctly.

Both sites are connected and I have configured the Mappngs , Folders , Placehoders and Networks etc.

I've even done a successful fail over with a Protection Group that had no VMs in it.

And therein lies the problem.

When I go to create a Protection Group (using vSR) I don't see any VMs listed.

My VMs are sitting on a Lun on the Production Side and this Lun is mapped to a Lun on the Recovery Site.

Both Luns are Openfilers

Can anyone tell me why I can't see the VMs or for that matter the Lun?

Is this because the Lun is Openfiler?

This is my first go off of SRM so don't have much experience with this.

See attached PS.

Many Thanks

Patsfan

Take a look here for step by step vSphere Replication installation and configuration with SRM: Installing SRM 5.1.1 & vSphere Replication – Part 2 | VMFocus

Just to make sure, how you're replicating the VMs ? Using vSphere Replication or "Openfiler" ?

Hi Richardson,

Both I would hope.

And feel free to educate me on this.

The way I understood it to be (and I can't say I read the whole PDF) was that vSR was one option and Array based replciation the other.

But now that you say it sounds like I'm trying to do both at the same time.

What should I have done when replicating with vSR?

I'm not sure if you will be able to use SRM with replicated volumes by Openfiler, since I believe that there is no Storage Replication Adapter to Openfiler... this way, you should replicate your VMs only using vSphere Replication.

Is it straight forward to replicate the VMs with vSR?

I'm unclear of the vSR process but will reopen the installation guide if need be.

I knid of knew going in to it that Openfiler might be a stretch but I ploughed on regardless plus I didn't have access to SRAs.

Hi Robinson,

I just has a chance to look at the link this morning.

Great link and explains it really well.

VMware should do more of this when putting together the installation PDF for a product.

You know what they say about pictures.

Anyway this answers alot of questions for me and to be honest I wasn't looking in the right place when trying to assign the VMs for vSR.

This article really illustrates it well.

I don't think it's explained very well in the installation guide.

I will test the vSR Recovery later.

Many thanks on this.

My apologies Richardson.

I called you 'Robinson'.

Getting your name mixed up with the Yankees Robinson Cano (the baseball player and  member of the 'Evil Empire')
