Licensing requirement for Protect and Reprotect

Hi Gurus,

Can a single 25vm pack license both sites, if it has only 5 vm's to be protected and reprotected back.

Appreciate if you could share KB artcles regarding licensing.

Thanks,

Rushdi

Please see below docs for example licensing details -

Site Recovery Manager 5.5 Documentation Center

VMware KB: Licensing VMware vCenter Site Recovery Manager

Licensing VMware SRM 5.0 – Gabes Virtual World

I would also suggest you to check with VMware sales or TAM before selecting number of license.

Thanks,

Yes. SRM is licensed per protected VM. If you are doing uni-directional protection you would keep the license key at the site where the protected VMs are located.  This would work best if you have your vCenters/PSCs setup in linked mode (prior to vSphere 6) or enhanced linked mode (vsphere 6). When they are setup in enhanced linked mode the licenses will automatically move/assign to VMs in the 2 vCenters instead of having to do it manually. This also would make bi-directional protection (VMs at each site protected at the other) easier

If you can't use linked mode or enhanced linked mode, if you install the same 25 VM license key at both sites you are in compliance as long as you don't protect more than a total of 25 VMs at both sites.

This document is the most up to date regarding SRM licensing: https://www.vmware.com/files/pdf/products/SRM/vmware-site-recovery-manager-customer-faq.pdf

I'll work to get it updated with the specific answer to your question.
