HI
I'm looking into SRM and upon reading the first couple of pages of the evaluation guide i understand i need multisite SAN infrastructure.
I already have Clusters configured at both sites and have been using VI3 for a while now
On my primary site i have an HP EVA and the secondary site is an EMC CX4. My applogies if this question has already been answered before, i'm happy to be directed toward a different thread.
I wonder is my environment a non starter for SRM or is there a third party connector i can use? Any pointing in the right direction would be appreciated.
The short answer is no, you can't do unlike SANs. As far as I am away there is no special connector you could get say from FalconStor or DataCore that is supported by VMware to make them appear alike.
At the heart of SRM is the SRA - The Site Recovery Adapter - its written by your array vendor to manage their arrays replicating to each other....

Damn, thats kinda what i expected. is there any other "best practive approach" to providing BCDR with such a setup?
I know there are a few products out there such as vReplicator but i havent looked into them much yet so if anyone can recommend a PROVEN path that i would be able to follow with mices storage hardware i'll award poonts for that.
Thanks for your quick response.
Sorry Mike,
your answer is incorrect..EMC has an appliance called "RecoverPoint" that does exactly that!!
however, for SRM compatability between different arrays, you need to read the SRM compatability matrix.

Yes.. BUT...
Doesn't recoverpoint ONLY work between two different EMC SANs?
And the question was about two different SAN Vendors...???

nope..
Recoverpoint also works between two different vendors!!
in the context of SRM, please refer to page 11-12 of the compatability guide

Ah, I sit corrected
Looks like the answer is go out buy RecoveryPoint...
Other options could be PlateSpin who have repositioned them selves as business continuity tool... I've often heard good things about NSI Double-Take and VMware, there's whitepaper somewhere... Finally, I understand Veeam's Backup as a host-based replication enginee like VizionCore. Never used any of these productions so cannot vouch for them!

are you sure you can not use both recover point adapters and netapp snapmirror adapaters.
from the documentation it makes sense that it could work - let me know if you are sure.
Hi Guys
I would please like to know yes / no is it possible to use SRM with dissimilar SAN Providors/Vendors. If it is how about do you go about configuring it.
Regards
Itzik is correct about this. You can use RecoverPoint to replicate between these two arrays. As for how to set that up, you should probably contact the EMC rep that sold you the CX-4's. I'm sure they'll be happy to help.
There might be other possiblities from other storage vendors. I'll reach out to them with this thread to see if they'd like to respond, just to be fair.
FalconStor has a Storage Replication Adapter for SRM that works with FalconStor NSS gateway (a storage virtualization device), NSS gateway can allow you to do heterogeneous replication between different SAN's even between a FC and an iSCSI SAN or even DAS resources. So the answer to the original question is yes it is possible. You can find the FalconStor SRA on the SRM compatibility list.
You also can test it with the NSS virtual appliance (you can find either on VMware Market place or on FalconStor website) for more info on how to set up SRM and the NSS VA you can visit. .
Hope this helps,
Hi, everybody. I don't mean to hijack or misdirect the thread, but I've been looking high and low to find out if my IBM DS4800 is supported by RecoverPoint so that I can use it to replicate out to my DR provider and utilize SRM. I haven't been able to find a clear answer; does anyone know?
Thanks so much and sorry to interject.
