Implement SRM using script in VSphere

Hi,

When we first evaluated the vmware's SRM couple of months ago we were using ESX 3.5. So far we were happy with the result even though we still think that SRM 1.0 still need some improvement. Then VSphere came out and we found out that SRM is not supported. We decided to go with ESX 4.0 because of Fault Tolerance feature. Is there a way we can implement SRM using vmware vi perl or powershell scripting for now until SRM for VSphere is available. Basically, we wanted the script to manage the VMs (suspend, power on/off, rescan HBA), manage the NetApp filer to break/resume the mirroring and to manage the DNS server to update dns entries during DR failover. Based on what I read it seems we can control the VMs using the vmware scripts but we are not sure about the NetApp if vmware scripting engine comes with a perl module that can remote execute a command for the netapp filer. Our other option is to remote ssh to the netapp filer using expect-ssh perl module. Appreciate any suggestion.

VMware released a 232 page PDF titled “A Practical Guide to Business Continuity & Disaster Recovery with VMware Infrastructure” on this topic. Although it will not communicate with the array it is your first step in the right direction.
