Is it possible to install Windows Vista in a virtual machine? I have tried but it keeps on failing because it can't se the cd-rom.

There are ways around this, but I've had the best success with actually burning the Vista ISO to a disc, and then using that to install Vista.
If you are trying to do it on a hosted platform, the Workstation 6.0 beta officially supports Vista in a virtual machine. Although it's in beta, the first release candidate was released tonight: http://www.vmware.com/products/beta/ws/
