You can use VMware Workstation and a decent PC to run 4 VMs to simulate an environment (2 ESX VM, 1 VC VM and one VM providing iSCSI or NFS for shared storage for the ESX VM). With the right hardware you can even power on a VM within ESX and vmotion it to the other ESX VM.

Hi,

With compatible Processors (Intel VT or AMD V) you can setup 2 ESX VM, 1 VC VM and one VM providing iSCSI or NFS for shared storage for the ESX VM in VMware workstation 6.5

To install ESX inside Vmware workstation an other docs refer http://xtravirt.com/search/node/esx%203.5

If you want to install ESX or ESXi on a laptop or desktop, it'll mostly come down to the storage controller and NIC in them. What do you have specifically?

i have 2 laptops both Centrino duo , one with 2 GB and other with 3 GB and i one HP deskton with Pentium dual core - 1GB. All have Windows XP but i ve disk for Windows 2003 server as well.

also can i use VMware Server 2.1 instead of Workstation 6.5 for my test lab ?? i slightly confused with VMware Server concept , i mean in prod enviroment we install ESX/ESXi on a bare metal physical machine 1st , than u install a Virtual Center to manage existing or new ESX hosts and other tools like update manager , heart beat etc etc ? than where does we use VMware Server ??? where will VMware server fit in such scenario ??

Hi,

To setup lab you can also use VMware server instead of workstation

http://xtravirt.com/search/node/xs10003

Please check your CPU whether present or not in the VT supported list

http://www.intel.com/distributed/modules/sitelets/centrinoduo_spec.htm

http://ark.intel.com/VTList.aspx#581

Also what is the model name of your HP Desktop?

yeah both my laptops are in VT list , i'll desktop when i m back home .

i was wondering is it possible to setup a lab on my laptop itself , i mean can i have a VM with VC running over it , than 1-2 VMs as ESX Host with few VMs inside them ?? will that work ? would i be able to test most of the things with this way ?

Thanks mate , i found out that VMware server works on Server OS , i have XP so i m back to Workstation 6.5.

Hi,

Yes, VMware workstation 6.5 will work if you have VT supported CPU to setup ESX lab

hey prakash , will this work on workstation 6.5 ?? also can u please mention me basic steps what i need to do start downloading ISO .

Also just an update that i was able to setup 2 VMs , 1 as ESX Host with ESXi and 2nd Windows 2003 server with vCenter. Both are communicating using NAT , next step i think i would need is a storage VM, would be nice if you can provide me steps for openfiler.

cheers, thanks so much for ur help so far.
