A simple question, I hope.

We have been testing both ESXi 3.5 and now vSpher ESXi in our lab for a few months and are now ready to buy. I just have a question regarding the licensing that I have gotten conflicting informaiton on and I have not been able to find a post that answers my exact question.

I know that vSphere is licensed on a per processor basis now. If you have one host with 2 processors then you need 2 vSphere licenses. My question is are the license per cpu also per host? For example if I three dual processor servers that I want to use as hosts do I need to only buy 2 licenses since each host only has 2 CPUs or do I need to buy 2 licenses per host for a total of six licenses?

Thanks.

the licenses are per physical socket in each host.

You would need 6 in that example.

There is a need of 6 licenses, its mean 2 license per host in your environment.
