ESXi 5.1 on ESX 4.1

Hi, I have physical hosts installed ESX, 4.1.0, 260247 and I tried install nested ESXi, 5.1.0 1065491.

Install successful, then I tried to setup in VM on the nested ESXi 5.1, when I power up, I hit the error

An error was received from the ESX host while powering on VM WinXP.

Running VMware ESX in a virtual machine requires the outer virtual machine to be configured for running a VMware ESX guest operating system. You cannot power on a virtual machine until the outer virtual machine is reconfigured.

How can I configure to allow the nested ESXi work.

You should add this configuration option to the ESX 5.1 VM.  See http://kb.vmware.com/kb/1016098 for more information.

UNder ESX 4.1, you need the following configuration option for the outer VM:

monitor_control.restrict_backdoor = TRUE

Hi, which configuration I should edit? Does it require to reboot after edit? The outer VM mean the ESX 4.1?

The outer VM is ESXi 5.1. The inner VM is WinXP.  You should edit the configuration file for the ESXi 5.1 VM.  The VM should be powered off when you edit the configuration file.
