Am I restricted to accessing a nested guest in vSphere Client Console or is there another way to get to the guest? Remote Desktop?

You should be able to access both the virtual ESXi host and nested VM from your LAN. How is the networking setup for the ESXi VM? I.e. are you using bridged mode for the networking?
