5.1 ESXi in 5.1 ESXi guest network can't ping

I have the following setup:

Physical Layer:

4 hp blades with 5.1 installed on each with vCenter attached to each.

I have 1 dvs network defined labeled "Trunked" with vlans 0-4094 trunked and Promiscious is marked as Accept.

Virtual Layer:

In there, I have 2 x 5.1 ESXi vms.  When I initially created the virtual esxi vm, I checked the Expose hardware assisted virtualization to the Guest OS flag, I used Red Hat Linux 64 and I changed the SCSI controller to LSI Logic Parallel, all using the web gui 9. Once the hardware version 9 shell was created, I went into the old vi client and the changed the guest type to vmware esxi 5.  From there, I attached the esxi media and installed it.

In each virtual esxi, I added vlan 308 to the management vmkernel nic and I added a standard portgroup labeled "VM Network" with vlan 308 tagged to it.

The vms in each virtual host can only ping other vms under that same host and the host itself.  They can not ping any other vms in the second virtual host or any vms on that same vlan.

Any clue what I'm missing?

Thanks!

Hi,

Could you create a VM Network without the VLAN just to discard VLANs beeing responsable for the error?

I faced a similar error (without VLANs) just a couple of days ago. See this:

I figured it out.  I needed to Accept the Forged Transmits on the "Trunked" portgroup.
