RHEL-8 guest falure under V15.5

Please help a newcomer to VMWARE and RHEL-8,

I have successfully installed, on my Win-10 laptop, VMWARE Workstation V15.5 followed by creating a new Linux virtual machine plus having the VMWARE wizard complete the guest installation

from the RHEL-8 ISO file.

Although I was not given the opportunity to select the GUI interface, the guest RHEL-8 started normally and I was able to login with my user-id / password and execute a few simple commands

until I tried to execute a “man -k user” command that completely failed to produce the expected results.

I repeated it with diagnostics via “man -k -d user” which shows various missing files that may point to the root of the problem.

Please review my session log below and thanks for any help in this matter.

After browsing various discussions and Red Hat intro pages I found “RHEL 8 VirtualBox Quick Install” by Mike Guerette, Technical Marketing Manager at Red Hat.
Although it does not describe the VMWARE install, it became clear to me that I had not registered my new RHEL-8 system and that most probably it was missing the necessary tools.
With that in mind I started a Linux Terminal session and proceeded with:
1. Start a root shell:
[rhmiker@localhost ~]$ su
Password:
2. Register my new RHEL-8 system:
[root@localhost rhmiker]# subscription-manager register --auto-attach
3. Check the existence of BaseOS and AppStream repos:
[root@localhost rhmiker]# yum repolist
4. Install latest updates:
[root@localhost rhmiker]# sudo yum update
5. Reboot with the updated kernel package:
[root@localhost rhmiker]# reboot
6. Install Development Tools:
[root@localhost rhmiker]# sudo yum groupinstall "Development Tools"
7. install kernel development packages:
[root@localhost rhmiker]# sudo yum install kernel-devel elfutils-libelf-devel
8. install Python on RHEL-8
[root@localhost rhmiker]# yum install python3
9. install Java 8 and 11 on RHEL-8
[root@localhost rhmiker]# sudo yum install java-1.8.0-openjdk-devel
[root@localhost rhmiker]# sudo yum install java-11-openjdk-devel

And now the “man” command behaves as expected and I can resume my Linux education.
