Quiescing Linux

Hi Folks - when you start searching around to understand how and if Linux is quiesced during VM backups its a complete nightmare due to the lack of published detail,,   This is the best thing I could find:    https://kb.vmware.com/s/article/2044492

When you look at this KB, you see that VMWare is claiming that "other" guest OS which means anything that's NOT windows, you only get crash consistent backups,   but then it goes in the resolution to state that 3 things are tried sequentially, but makes no claim that any of it works or is supported

1. Using FIFREEZE/FITHAW ioctls build into the kernel

2. Using a VMware kernel module (vmsync)

3. Using the Linux sync command

then the following text appears:

"Each of the above methods also allows you define custom scripts which are called by vmtools before and after the quiesce.

An example of creating your own freeze/thaw scripts is below:

/usr/sbin/pre-freeze-script
----------------------------------
fsfreeze -f /

/usr/sbin/post-thaw-script
---------------------------------
fsfreeze -u /

"

Can someone please provide clarity around this poorly written KB?

Will any of these methods work without creating the script referenced that was first posted 9 years ago in 2012?:

And would this script even work today?

I can't believe this is documented so poorly..
