Current Options for Linux Guest OS Performance Counters

I've been working a rather difficult CentOS application issue on a VM guest and it appears to be CPU in nature but I'm just not seeing anything in ESXTOP.  Are there any guest counters in linux like Windows has via the VMware tools?  I know historically there haven't been-- thought I'd throw it out there for a current check.

You have to create your own wrapper by Python and VMware's VMGuestLib SDK.
