CentOS 6 kmod packages install time

I've been working on a few CentOS 6 VMs, and the kmod (kernel module) packages from the OSPs (5.1latest branch) are taking a very long amount of time to install (several minutes per module). All of the other vmware-tools packages install very quickly. This happens on upgrades as well as clean installs (including completely clean CentOS installs). During the installation of the packages, the VM's CPU is pegged at 100% and 'top' in the OS shows several processes (dracut, gzip, cpio, weak-modules) getting a lot of CPU time. The packages do install successfully and the kernel modules load normally. Boot-up time is not affected, but I thought the installation delay was odd since I haven't experienced it with other Linux distros/versions. Happens with both 32-bit and 64-bit CentOS.

Anyone else had the same thing, and better yet have a solution? Thanks.
