Upload a VM to Student Cloud based on physical hardware

Upload a VM based on physical hardware

You can take an existing Virtual Machine (VM) image and upload into Student Cloud. This will allow instructors to create shared vApps and VMs with students.

Prerequisites

You have a VMware.com username and password and are successfully logged into Student Cloud as a System Administrator. The computer from which you are uploading must have Java Plug-in 1.6.0_10 or later installed.

Procedure

  1. Navigate a browser to https://www.vmware.com/tryvmware/?p=converter and login.
  2. Download and install the correct version for your operating system. (If you are unsure about your installation options, accept the default choices.)
  3. Launch VMware vCenter Converter Standalone.
  4. Click Convert Machine.
  5. Select "This local machine" and click next.
  6. Under Select destination type select "VMware Workstation or other VMware virtual machine"
  7. Under Select VMware product select the most recent version of VMware Workstation.
  8. Choose a local location for the converted file and click next.
  9. Choose which settings to convert to the new VM and click next.
  10. Verify your choices on the Summary screen and click finish. (Note: This can take quite some time.)
  11. After successfully converting the VM you can exit the Converter.
  12. Navigate a browser to https://www.vmware.com/support/developer/ovf/ and download the most recent and correct operating system and architecture OVF tool.
  13. Install the OVF tool. (If you are unsure about your installation options, accept the default choices. , for help on the OVF tool see here.)
  14. Run the OVF tool from the command line, with the following syntax: " ovftool sourcelocator.vmx targetlocator.ovf "(Note: This can take quite some time)
  15. Log in the vCloud Director (Note: This is separate from the Student Cloud Interface and you will need Administrator privileges.)
  16. At the top navigation, click Catalogs.
  17. Click vApp Templates.
  18. Click the Upload button.
  19. Click Browse, and select the newly created OVF file and click Open.
  20. In the Upload Media dialog box, type the name of the media file.
  21. This is the name that appears in Cloud Director.
  22. In the Destination panel, type the name and description.
  23. Select the destination vDC and catalog.
  24. Click Upload.

Your OVF file is available in the specified location
