MSCS machines with RDM, how to change datastore?

Hi everybody,

       I'm having an issue relocating 2 machines with RDM disks.
We have 2 ESxi 4.1 hosts with virtualcenter, but no license for vmotion.

This 2 machines is building a Microsoft Cluster (MSCS) (File server) with many (5) disks as RDM,
for a total space of 8,9 TB. Obviously, for usage with MS cluster, the RDM is with physical compatibility.

The problem is that the local vmdk (and also the rdm.vmdk files)  of these 2 machines are on local datastore (one machine for each host) and I need to move them to shared storage. But if I power off a machine and try to change datastore with the RDM attached, I receive an error because the VMFS of the shared dastore (block size = 1 MB) doesn't support such large files (up to 2 TB).

I tried to poweroff the machine, remove the RDM, migrate to another datastore and then reattach the RDM.
There is a big problem with the latest point, because I don't know how to readd the RDM manually (vmfsktools??).
I want to add an existing disk, but it was in local storage, and I don't want anymore any reference to file in local storage...
According to vmware documentation for MSCS, disks of second node of cluster can be added simply adding an existing disk and selecting the
existing ones of the first node. If it was in shared storage no problem, but the host can't read the local storage of another host...

Any suggestion to migrate a VM with RDM from local to shared storage? Thanks

Thank you very much Andrea, for the quick reply.

Indeed, I had found the suggestion to detach and reattach the RDM in some of your previous posts, but I don't know how...Today I am writing from another customer, but tomorrow I'll try the solution proposed by you; however I think it's just what we needed to solve the problem. If it works well I'll give you the points for the correct answer, and come back to the forum to give a confirmation. Thank you again!

se ho capito bene questo serve per poter dare a due VM la visibilità di una stessa LUN da usare come raw device, ad esempio quando si fanno cluster con delle applicazioni "san aware" come l'exchange 2010.... in tal caso mi risolve una domanda prima ancora che dovessi farvela

Un modo è questo (benché non sia citato nel documento relativo al cluster al livello delle VM).

Quello ufficiale è aggiungere il disco RDM alla prima VM e poi alla seconda dare il file vmdk esistente della prima VM. Ma se entrambe non vedono lo lo stesso datastore questo non è possibile (nel qual caso l'unico metodo rimane disattivare temporaneamente il LUN filtering).

A questo punto mi resta un unico dubbio. Nel caso del cluster Microsoft ho spostato tutti i resource group sulla prima macchina, mentre dalla seconda ho rimosso i RDM. A questo punto se li aggiungo direttamente alla seconda macchina, non c'è nessun rischio di "corruzione" dei dati mentre sono già in uso dalla prima? L'alternativa sarebbe pianificare un disservizio spegnendo entrambe le macchine, nel mio caso spostarle nel datastore condiviso,  riaggiungere la LUN alla prima e poi dare alla seconda il vmdk esistente appena ricreato. Se invece mi puoi confermare che è una procedura consolidata, posso lavorare sulla seconda lasciando il cluster attivo sulla prima senza creare disservizio. Grazie dell'eventuale conferma.

ho provato ora, se ho capito bene mappo tutto sulla prima VM, prendo la seconda VM e faccio add hard disk->use an existing virtual disk e seleziono il vmdk opportuno dalla directory della prima VM, right?

Nei casi in cui fare questo sia possibile è anche il metodo preferibile o farlo con il "trucco" che si diceva prima potrebbe dare dei vantaggi?

Il rischio di corruzione c'è solo nel momento in cui il disco diventa online e con una lettera assegnata.

Allora hai due OS che tritano lo stesso filesystem e questo non va bene su filesystem non cluster aware.

Per rispondere a Tinto1970 io consiglio di seguire quanto riportato nei documenti ufficiali: http://www.vmware.com/pdf/vsphere4/r41/vsp_41_mscs.pdf

Altre varianti (come anche quello di creare a mano un RDM file mapper in una cartella indipendente da quelle delle VM) potrebbero non essere supportate... e comunque non danno particolari vantaggi (a parte forse una maggiore "pulizia" nell'organizzazione dei file).

Grazie mille Andrea per il suggerimento.

Ho appena ripristinato il cluster utilizzando il parametro che disabilita il filtro delle RDM sullo storage.

Procedura semplice ed efficace: problema risolto!!
