RHEL8 - No/intermittent sound

Currently running rhel 8 os and horizon client 2111 (thin client). When signing in, the vmware sound would load intermittently. When it fails to load I could disconnect from the vm and reconnect, it would load. Looking at the settings>sound>applications, when vmware is there on the list, the sound works. When not, the sound does not work.

Please advise on a work around or a way I could troubleshoot this issue further into the intermittent issue.

Thank you

When you hit the no/intermittent sound issue, do you mean if you play audio within the desktop, you could not hear the sound? Or do you mean if you try to use microphone from client side, it didn't work? We tried on Red Hat 8 OS, but didn't hit the issue. Do you have specific steps to reproduce it? e.g. disconnect/reconnect, steal session end etc? Does it work if you wait for longer time after launch the session? (e.g. 30 seconds or 1 minutes?) Which protocol did you use? Blast or PCoIP? Which Horizon client did you use? Linux client or HTML Access Client with Firefox as browser? It would also be helpful if you could collect DCT logs on both client and agent, and upload them here with timestamp. Client: Horizon client menu -> Help -> About -> Collect Support Data, upload tar.gz file. Agent: C:\Program Files\VMware\VMware View\Agent\DCT\support.bat, then upload generated zip bundle on desktop.

Hello Chengs,

Setup: 10zig thin client - Ubuntu with vmware-view 2106.1-8.3.1).

OS: RHEL 8 with Agent verison 8.5.0-19566978

Horizon Server: 8.4.0 build - 19067837 - 2111

Protocol: Blast

Issue: No sound after a user signs into the RHEL OS. No sound from firefox or anything else when playing for example youtube.

Workaround: Disconnect from the server (While user is still logged in, File > Disconnect from Server) and then establishing the connection back to the VM. The sound will work afterwards.

As for logs I will have to get look for in on the linux side is there a specific log from /tmp/vmware- ?

HI Jnyb

When you meet no sound issue in RHEL desktop, Could you help to check following infomation:

1)  In the remote RHEL 8 desktop execute following command, and share the output to us:

      pax11publish

2) Check permission of folder in RHEL 8 VM as following, the permission shoube "750", not "700":

      ls -d /run/user/[your uid]

3) Check the logs in /tmp/vmware-Desktopworker-xxxx.log check wether any error in the latest /tmp/vmware-Desktopworker-xxxx.log

4) Check the logs in /tmp/vmware-root/vmware-mks-xxxx.log. open the latest vmware-mks-xxxx.log, check whether any error log with key world "Audio"

It is better to collect the whole RHEL 8 agent log to us, your can run /usr/lib/vmware/viewagent/bin/dct-debug.sh to collect the logs, and the tar log package should be created in current folder.

Hello songkai,

I will send over the logs.

1) in the logs.

2) this file is set at 700. Any reason why it is set at 700 from the beginning? Should I go ahead and set this to 750?

3) in the logs, it does look like there are some issues with audio.

4) in the logs, it does look like there are some issues with audio.
