LightDM as Ubuntu 20.04 greeter

I've been trying to overcome the  GDM3 greeter problem that's described in KB https://kb.vmware.com/s/article/79640

Despite implementing the workaround the login screen still displays the symptoms from the KB

I thought that LightDM could be a workaround to the GDM3 issues, but when I dpkg-reconfigure to lightdm, I am unable to log in to the desktop pool whatsoever.

Is LightDM not a valid greeter for a Ubuntu 20.04 Horizon 8 Desktop pool - or do I need some additional config?

LightDM is not officially supported in Ubuntu 20.04.

Ok, thanks for responding.

Any clues as to why the solution in the KB doesn't work?

Please execute "dpkg-reconfigure gdm3" again, then re-install Linux viewagent, then update /usr/share/applications/org.gnome.Shell.desktop as KB required, then reboot, and have a try.

If it still does not work, could you please paste the content here for org.gnome.Shell.desktop? Thanks.

We've been having the same issue, and the fix given here doesn't work.

org.gnome.Shell.desktop is:

[Desktop Entry]
Type=Application
Name=GNOME Shell
Comment=Window management and application launching
Exec=sh -c "DISPLAY=:${DISPLAY##*:} exec /usr/bin/gnome-shell"
Categories=GNOME;GTK;Core;
OnlyShowIn=GNOME;
NoDisplay=true
X-GNOME-Autostart-Phase=DisplayServer
X-GNOME-Provides=panel;windowmanager;
X-GNOME-Autostart-Notify=true
X-GNOME-AutoRestart=false
X-GNOME-HiddenUnderSystemd=true
X-Ubuntu-Gettext-Domain=gnome-shell
