risk of rebalance of datastores

awhile back I was told never storage vmotion a linked clone vm because it would cause the sparse disk to expand to the size of the replica.

Now in one of the view 5.1 guides it mentions using the rebalance function to distribute the load/space of linked clones between datastores. So my question is does this also run the risk of actually taking up more space by causing the sparse disk to expand.

You should be aware of that a rebalance also does a refresh.
