install usb (serial cable) driver on virtual machine

Dear all,

We have a vmware horizon setup here at our school. We have a master VM with Windows 7 + Softwares (Office, Chrome, Picaxe) installed. We have this software called PICAXE which use special USB (serial) cable that connects to the external microcontroller for programming. There is a driver that comes with this cable that has to be installed. On the Windows 7 VM I have already installed the driver.

I have provisioned 10 vdi desktop using above master Windows 7 VM. When I now logon from the vdi client and plug the USB cable it says the device is not recognised, Device Manager shows yellow exclamation. I can manually install the driver at that point which works.

Now my question is, Is there any way I can passthrough the USB cable connected from my computer to the Master VM on vSphere then install the driver with the cable before provisioning the vdi desktops.

Any help would be much appreciated, thank you.

We had similar issues. Once in windows with the yellow exclamation point, unplug and replug the USB to serial adapter and it will probably work fine.

This was not an ideal solution for us so we tried another brand adapter with its driver. That worked just fine. Try one with "GUC232A" chip.
