display physically connected to card to enable vDGA?

Relevant versions:

ESXi 5.5

Windows 8 VM

Quadro 2000

nvidia 320.86 drivers

View Agent 5.3

VDCA plugin

View Client 2.3

I followed documentation to enable vDGA in view (enable passthrough, install driver, install agent, run monterey enable), but was not able to connect with view client and make use of the graphics card.  After finally trying a tip in another post, I plugged a display into the card and whent into the device manager in the vm and disabled the svga adapter.  Finally, it works.

My question is why is this required, or what am I missing?  I did not set any pool settings as I'm using VDCA.  Is there a registry setting needed? I used --desktopprotocol pcoip and --desktoplayout fullscreen when running the client.

I do not think that Windows 8 is supported with vDGA yet, that is probably why.

I don't know if the Quadro 2000 is supported.  Thought you needed at least the 4000.

Quadro 2000 works fine with vDGA but not vSGA. Supported is another matter...
