This is really an area where we've been kind of disappointed. The upgrade guide specifically says "If you use full-clone desktops or other virtual machines that you added as individual desktops or as part of a manual pool, upgrade View Agent by using whatever third-party tools you usually use for software upgrades." I think VMware kind of "passed the buck" here. We basically had to upgrade all of our individual desktops manually. It was kind of tedious, but luckily we didn't have too many. Rolling out the updated agent through recomposing our linked clones was much easier.

It would be nice if they had a more automated-way even if it was similar to how VMware Tools upgrades work. That aside, a lot of issues I had with the product in 4.0 have been made much better in 4.5, so at least we're on the right track!

I don't look like it as VMware passed the buck. It would be nice if you could generate an agent upgrade like you do with the tools but in the end it's an application. Handle it like you would any other applicaiton inside of the VM. What happens if you need to upgrade Office or something like Adobe.

The agent isn't just an application. It becomes a core piece of the operating system.

But in any case, you can update Office through WSUS, and Adobe has automatic updates available in the software itself. Both provided by the vendor.

Maybe those have an auto update mechanism but what do you do for the applications that do not? What do you do for the View client? I'm not saying it wouldn't be beneficial but other applications suffer fromt his same issue and you have to find work around for them too. We should probably suggest something like this as a feature request.
