Would like to bypass desktop choice when only one desktop is available

When users sign on and are only entitled to one desktop, I would like to just bypass the desktop choice. In other words, just sign on directly when only one desktop is available.

Thx in advance.

The solution can be found here:

http://kb.vmware.com/selfservice/microsites/search.do?language=en_US&cmd=displayKC&externalId=101384...

Its not as pretty as I would like and I'm still looking to see if I can find you a cleaner solution (such as a way to deploy the client with this auto configured)

If you are on a Zero Client its even easier, just check the box for "autoconnect if only one desktop present"

Found it!

Launch the View Client with the following flag

-desktopName xxxx (where xxx is the desktop you want auto-connected)

This is only valid in the View 5.0 Client.

Thanks for the research!

I think your first suggestion is closer to what we are looking for. Unfortunately, it does require client configuration.

We are talking about technically challenged users who are only entitled to one desktop, but may need to connect from any one of several thin clients/fat clients during any given day.

In other words: skip the choice of desktop/options when the user is only entitled to one desktop.

Thx.

Yea, the only solution to that is to add the addtional -desktopName flag to the Icon.  THat or use a Zero Client.

I have the same problem.

I have played with recycled PCs with Windows Thin PC and a shell reconfigured with Wiew Client and GPOs to change things around but didn't find a way to get this to work.

Much easier to handle with Zero client and just an option to tick Smiley Wink

Surely an option Mister VMware should add in its to dev list :smileylaugh:

I think there is some confusion between "Kiosk Mode" which attaches a single client (device) to a View Desktop and what I am actually looking for:

Let's say "Sally," a 12-year old middle-school student stis down at a thin-client and logs in with her AD user/password.

Because "Sally" is only entitled to one desktop, I would like her to be logged in immediately, as opposed to being presented with a choice of one desktop

Now let's say "Jimmy," the 34-year old IT admin sits down at the same thin client and logs in with his AD user/password.

Since "Jimmy" is entitled to many desktops, he will be presented with the choice of entitled desktops.

Believe it or not, allowing a technically-challenged user to "choose" a desktop when they are entitled to only one, is actually a problem. For technically-challenged users, the fewer options between the time they enter their user/password the better.

Previous suggestions would merely lock one client (which is a device, not a user) to a virtual desktop, which is better accomplished with Kiosk Mode anyway.

Thanks for the reasearch and suggestions, I must not have not stated my question clearly to begin with.

It is actually possible to switch the Windows shell, "explorer.exe" in the registry to re-purpose old PC's as effective thin clients. THey boot directly to the VIew Client. Works great!

Described in this whitepaper: http://www.vmware.com/files/pdf/pc_to_thin_desktop.pdf

Did you find an answer for this?  I would like to avoid that Desktop Selection as well.  It is too confusing for some.
