Windows 8 and Persona Management

I just want to see if anybody else has had the same experience I have with Windows 8 in View. Using View 5.1.0, I've created Windows 8 Enterprise 32-bit and 64-bit pools, and enabled Persona Management using a GPO and within the View Agent. These desktops are in a separate OU from existing View desktops, and the policy applied to them directs the persona to a different repository, with identical permissions and ownership to the existing, working, Persona Management repository for Windows 7 VMs. There seem to be 3 things that will happen:

1. The .v2 folder simply doesn't get created in the repository. Navigating to the location, a user can create a folder, so this does not appear to be a rights issue.

2. If there is an existing .v2 folder in the repository, the Welcome screen will be followed by a black screen with a white mouse cursor. Disconnecting and reconnecting to the desktop, it will display a blue screen, similar to the Welcome screen, that says Signing Out... and never goes away.

3. The Welcome screen appears, but the login process never gets past that point.

Has anybody else seen these same symptoms with Windows 8, or has anybody successfully gotten PM to work with Windows 8? I haven't seen anything about it anywhere online, so I thought I'd start this discussion in case anybody else has their own stories to relate.

Hi,

“Windows 8 “ is not an supported operating system for View Agent on view 5.1.

Please refer the view-51-installation guide , the Supported Operating Systems for View Agent . Following are the links for the same.

http://pubs.vmware.com/view-51/topic/com.vmware.ICbase/PDF/view-51-installation.pdf.

Thanks,

Manesh

Thanks for the feedback and document. I understand that it's not supported but, as comes up in these communities from time to time, "not supported" doesn't always mean "won't work." Sometimes it also means, "might work but don't call us about it." I was just surprised at the complete lack of posts about anybody else trying it, just to see if it might work. If anybody else were able to confirm my findings, it would make me feel more confident that it just doesn't work yet, and less like I must be doing something wrong. And if there's a post about it not working for me and others, it might keep somebody else from spending a weekend trying it and being frustrated.

It works well with Win 8 and Horizon v5.2!!!   In fact our users who had Win 7 fired up new Win 8 machines and all their profile data moved right to Win 8, but you have to make sure your profiles are v2 which they will be if you are using Windows 7.   I have not had to do this but there is a tool which will convert your profiles too....

Thanks for the followup. You're right. Persona Management works great with Windows 8 using the latest View release. It was just the previous release, that didn't officially support Windows 8, that was giving me some problems. Since the update, it's been smooth sailing!
