Windows 10 Start Tiles and Persona Management

We are developing a Windows 10 Enterprise 1511 virtual desktop image in a local domain, with the Store disabled, without Azure sync or Microsoft accounts, and without OneDrive. All the applications and %ALLUSERSPROFILE%\Microsoft\Windows\Start Menu\Programs for all the non persistent VM's will be identical.

Initial testing of these VM's reveals that when a user logs off of one VM and logs into another, their Start Tiles to not roam with them. I read alot of people are a little dismayed and imply that Microsoft is trying to kill the Roaming Profile.

Using Persona Management and roaming %localappdata%, after a logoff, at the next logon there are quite a few issues. The Start menu often fails to open or is blank.

It turns out that specifying a roaming profile path in the users active directory object was the cause for partial persona management synchronization. Despite this working with windows 7 and persona management, windows 10 and persona management seem to not work together when a profile path is specified in the AD object and perhaps in other GPO's that apply to the VM OU or User OU.

Perhaps we could use an Enforced GPO to set "Only allow local user profiles" and apply it to the Horizon VM OU.

We do want to be able to specify a path in the users object for when they log into a physical computer and the GPO from VMware is supposed to override that. "Override Active Directory user profile path if it is configured." must be broken or does not work as expected in Windows 10.

If your metro apps are failing to start, try the powershell from "the dead" in the following post [IE11] and Edge crash on start if customer use Roaming Profile (Win10 1511) | Microsoft Connect

Hi Eric,

What is your View version?

Is it possible to attach persona logs after user logoff so I can quick scan on it?

same problem here.

We deploy our start menu layout in Windows 10 via group policy (the powershell exported XML layout file-way). After login with User1 the layout is fine - after logout, a new desktop gets assigned, persona profile loaded to new desktop the startmenu seems not loaded correctly, sometimes you can't even make a search in the startmenu.

best regards

I'm not sure if this is serious issue with you.

But to know what is going on, please mention your agent version and attach persona logs.

Hopefully we can find the clue from there.

This is Windows 10 Enterprise 64bit with Horizon View Agent 6.2.2.3508800. The Connection server is 6.2.0 build-3005368. We redirect most personal folders with the exception of AppData. I can provide you with logs and will do so OOB.

The issue is present regardless of whether we try to additionally roam %localappdata%. The sequence of events goes like this. With a floating linked clone pool a user logs into Windows 10 for the first time ever. The new .V5 persona directory get created for that user with a .lck lock file. Pin some items to the start menu and task bar. Customize Microsoft Edge by specifying a custom start page and make import some bookmarks, visit a page that sets a cookie. Wait around 15 minutes for the persona to sync up to the repository even though a logoff will trigger the same. Logoff and wait for the VM to finish sync'ing your profile to the repository and then log into another Windows 10 VM.

The Start menu will now be completely absent of any pinned items and Edge will have lost the customization made earlier.

exactly the same issue like EricNichols posted.

AS mentioned here, maybe this is fixed in the Windows 10 Update release in June:

Powershell scripting the Windows 10 Export-StartLayout during logoff to effectively roam the StartLa...

I have one bug ticket with Microsoft regarding to "Tile Data Model" service which is introduced in Win10.

According to the last report I got, MS already has code-fix but the release date is still undetermined.

Let's see if after MS releases the fix, the issue still occurs.
