Which RAID protection to use with VDI

Which RAID protection to use with VMware View.

We are intent to build 25 VMware VDI's for videoconferencing.

What is better to use with 25 VMware VDI on storage. RAID 3 or 5 when using videoconferencing on it? Because of the streaming I would say 3.

I know that everything depends on the IOPS profile but this one is difficult. Difficult to foresee.

Do you have enough disk to create both setups for testing? That would be the most ideal situation in my opinion.

I'm afraid not.

Do you have any kind of storage numbers for these machines? I would recommend testing different Raid types before moving into production or at the very least create a few machines and try to create a storage profile that will assist you in the design. There is a good storage read on Brian Madden's site.

Because of the streaming I would say 3.

RAID 3 is better for streaming than RAID 5, that's correct. However you don't stream from the RAID 3 disks, videoconferencing does not affect the disks, it's more the network bandwidth and CPU which is affected.

For the RAID system - in my opinion - it does not make a difference which RAID level (3 or 5) you use.

Thanks guy's for your opinion so far. When you look at it that way indeed RAID 3 will not make a difference.
