VmWare View4 - Questions

Question: Hi,

We are strongly considering moving our desktop infrastructure to VDI and migrate to Windows 7.

We were wondering if someone could answer these questions:

1.) We currently have about 500 physical desktops. We would like to use these desktops for the first deployment and then gradually replace them with Wyse terminals (or similar). Is there any way to install VMWare View client without the need of having to have an OS installed on the computer. Our goal is to replace the current Windows XP and install a piece of software (similar to what the terminals are using) and then load the VMWare view client. Are there any ways to accomplish this setup?

2.) Also we have a lot of mobile users and some of them they do not need a dedicated computer. We think that configuring a pool of computers by department would be a good approach however we are wondering if the following issues could be solved by View4.

A.) Handicap users with special settings – If we have a pool by department is there any native way within View4 that will allow us to push a particular set of settings that are required for these users? Or do we have to do that via GPOs?

B.) If we use a generic pool of computers by Department how do we deal with the users data like their local profiles with their particular desktop shortcuts, favorites, etc.? If they logon to the VMs those profiles are going to be stored locally on the VMs and the will generate at list the following issues:

B1.) The size of the VMs is going to keep growing - We could use non-persistent however the profiles

will be deleted every time the computer is rebooted and their personalized profile data will be lost.

B2.) If we use this type pool they will get any of the VMs that is available when they request the access,

perhaps the VM the get is the one in which they didn't leave their local profile (with shortcuts, favorites,

etc.)

Does the implementation of roaming profiles is the only way to overcome issue B?

3.) How does VMView and VDI will work with Adobe Photoshop and similar products for the digital image management? We have some computers that work with large image files.

4.) View4 - Migrating from XP to Windows7 - Have you done this type of migration on any of your clients? If so, how was the transition? Were they using their current desktop infrastructure and installing View client? Were they migrating to Terminals? What is the best approach?

1) Check you Devon-IT VDI Blaster it may be what your looking for starting at 19.95 per desktop - repurpose your existing PCs with thin client OS.

2) You may want to check out RTO virtual profiles. It was acquired by VMware and should make it on the upcoming View 4.5 release but you may be able to license it now with your 4.01 installation.

3) Working with high res images will definitely need PCoIP enabled. Native RDP will not meet your users expectations. PCoIP will handle resolutions up to 2560 X 1600 along with multiple monitors

4) Windows 7 Migration has its challenges. 64bit won't be supported until 4.5 release but most deployments are still utilizing 32bit. For now, managing software installations should be transparent, most software is compatible with Windows 7. Of course thats what ThinApp is for, if you have any rogue misbehaving apps just package them into that ThinApp bubble and problem is solved. Users profiles should be moved accordingly if there are settings for each user you are looking to preserve.

Hopefully that gets you enough details.

Hi,

Thanks for your anwser. Are there any informations about the release date for ViewWare View 4.5 yet? Or any beta that to test?

Also do you know if the if the RTO virtual profiles will be part of VmWare view 4.5?

Finally I am trying to get information about the View Client Native Mode (aka CVP) which seems to be a native full View client that can be used to replace the OS and to connect to View.

Any information about this?

Thank you.

Yeah RTO will be part of 4.5, but it will probably be a different SKU or license edition all together kinda like Enterprise plus for ESX.

For the view client Native Mode - think of this as a ESX hypervisor running on a laptop....which can switch between different virtual machines like your View Desktop that was checked out in offline mode or maybe a RedHat VM. I heard that newer laptops will just come with a hypervisor and people can buy the VMs that they need.

Citrix has one in the works too called Xen Client which is similar in concept.

If you found the answer useful please award points.

So the view client Native Mode can be used as kind of VDI blaster (http://www.devonit.com/software/vdi-blaster)? where you could connect to a VD without the need of having an OS already installed? Kind of like Wyse terminal but for PCs or laptops, etc.?

Is the client Native Mode available?

If I'm not mistaken it serves both purposes, an ESX server able to run multiple client virtual machines and as a mechanism to connect to your desktop hosted in the datacenter.
