Virtualized Active Directory & DNS server

Can I use a virtualized MS 2008 Server and use it as my Active Directory & DNS server when installing VMWare View 4?

Or, must the Active directory be a physical server?

Your AD infrastructure can exist in a virtual environment without any issues.

Technically it will work, however from a licensing point of view this is different.

from the EULA (http://www.vmware.com/download/eula/esx_esxi_eula.html):

VMware licenses ESX to you solely for hosting Desktop Virtual Machine(s), except you may run View Manager itself, vCenter Server, another Connection Broker and/or any management and performance monitoring tools used solely for ESX-hosted Desktop Virtual Machine(s) within an operating system of a Server.

That licensing requirement is only on the start kits and doesn't apply if you just purchased the add-on View licenses for use with your existing ESX servers.

AD roles will run perfectly well in a virtualised environment.

It is still a good idea to maintain at least one physical DC at each site, and have it or another hardware appliance provide NTP time authority services. Running your time server on a VM can sometimes raise issues die to time slicing and dynamic resource allocation.

Other than that, everything else should run without an issue (DNS, DHCP, etc etc).
