View Persona Management - Use case for Folder redirection?

Hello out there,

we are currently evaluating the use of persona management and are looking into a use case for using folder redirection in combination with persona mgmt.

Please consider remote repository and vm's are in the same LAN.

As far as I know following happens at logon:

- User profile is loaded

During user session:

replication happens as configured in GPO upload interval

At log off:

- final replication since the last replication interval

Furthermore after the user logs in files (e.g. .doc in my documents) are loaded on demand to local view-desktop from remote-repository. The same would happen if folder redirection was active, because the .doc has to be transferred from a network share via LAN to the local view-desktop and vice versa. The same amount of network traffic would be the result. For me its a little bit confusing what are the pro's and con's for folder redirection when persona is used. In case of just using windows roaming profiles it is clear for me because replication takes place only at logon/logoff which would increase logon/logoff time because replication (e.g. my documents).

I would appreciate it if someone can explain the difference between persona+folder redirection and without regarding network traffic.

Regards,

Matthias

as you pointed it out, there is really no difference in principal, the difference will come into place depending on the environment. is there shaping going on the network? where are the shares being serve from? what type of user and their work? these questions might make the deployment shift from one practice to the other.

but one should think about why folder redirection was implement, and that was to help out with profile corruption because of size (slow login/log off side effect, profiles should be as small as possible), sure persona enhance help profiles further, but I don't think these enhance are meant to replace folder redirection, but rather compliment.

in my deployment I use all the tools i can get my hands on, quotas, file screening, roaming profiles, folder redirection, and personal enhance, it might be more work, as a result I don't have to deal with angry users with slow login/log off (something you will definitely experience if you don't use folder redirection) - and profile corruption.

good luck

Sam

There's an explanation given in the Persona Mgmt admin guide.

it goes something along the lines of "If you are on a quick connection, use GPO folder redirection. if there is latency use Persona Mgmt folder redirection."

Gpo folder redirection is a link to a remote location and View PM folder redirection will stream the contents of the folder.
