View Performance Issues

Good Morning All,

I have a very small View 5 environment that I am trying to perfect so that I can hopefully go forward with a roll out in the office.  I've been trying to test this for quite sometime and I am still lacking in performance and I'm curious why and if I could get some ideas. One of the biggest issues I am facing is Video performance.  When users drag apps from pone monitor to the other the video is extremely choppy.  Trying to watch a video is pretty bad as well.  Audio  and video do not sync up at all.  I am only trying to run 10 Desktops at the present time. I've tried to modify the settings for PCOIP but nothing seems to matter.  The video performance is really the big issue at this point.   Here is my setup.  Thanks

Cluster - 3 Dell R710's running ESX1 5.1.  96GB RAM  CPU and Mem never exceed 50%

Storage - Netapp 2240 with SAS drives running NFS

Desktops are Win7 3GB RAM (Linked Clones) Replica and Clones on separate datatstores

VDI Broker has 4vCPU and 4GB RAM

Ext VDI Broker 2vCPU and 2GB RAM

Security server - 2vCPU and 2GB RAM

What is the video source, CODEC type and player type? What type of clients are you using? Zero, Windows, Linux, Mac? What are the specs of those clients? Do you have 3D enabled for the VMs?

The clients are Thick clients that are Windows 7.  Plenty of CPU and RAM on them.  The Proc is 2.7GHz Dual core and 4GB RAM.  Running HD Intel Graphics cards on them. I recently have 3D rendering enabled but there is no change there.  The issue was still there prior to changing that.  It's not really the video source that I am really concerned with as much as the overall performance.  Very choppy moving from one screen to the next.  Really bad lag.  I went through KB 2010359 and made changes but no chnage.  There is a 1-2 second lag when moving from one screen to the other.  Some suggest using an older client or agent but I haven't tried that yet.  Any thoughts??

That is for sure not right. What is the hardware version of the VM?

have you applied the optimisation recommendations in the Windows 7 and Windows 8 optimisation guide?

http://www.vmware.com/files/pdf/VMware-View-OptimizationGuideWindows7-EN.pdf

I suspect the choppiness when moving windows between screens is because you haven't disable "Show window contents while dragging" in the Visual Effects tab (see attached). This is disabled when running our suggested optimisations in the above:

rem Set Windows Visual Effects to Optimized for best performance

reg ADD “hku\temp\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\

VisualEffects” /v VisualFXSetting /t REG_DWORD /d 0x2 /f

I would also disable 3D in the pool, unless you need it, but based on what you've said above, you don't.

I was able to get better video performance out of vms running hardware version 7 for pools that required multiple monitors.

Not sure if you figured this out yet but it sounds like this is your answer
