So our big thing for View was to replace as many laptops as possible. We have been working with View over a year now and just now are starting to fully deploy it. My big question is what are you doing to satisfy the users who currently have laptops?
Scenario 1:
User has a laptop and does a lot of Powerpoint presentations / Projector
Scenario 2:
User has a laptop and works offline a lot. May or may not have internet connection.
Scenario 3:
User has a laptop and sometimes requires the use of his desktop at monthly meetings etc away from his desk.
Given these scenarios, my intitial thought was to repurpose some of our Dell D820 devices and the users who really are mobile (not just the users who have a laptop to check email at home) will receive one of them. The users who occasionally need mobile access would be required to check one out. (Will receive a lot of negative feedback about this...as the previous convenience of just having a laptop and not checking anything out will come up here)
The D820s would be locked down so only the following would be allowed execute:
- VMware View Client
- Wireless Utilities
- Powerpoint
- Word
- Excel
- Access
- Internet Explorer
We would not allow local drive access as soon as you do that you might as well give them a full laptop. Only Flash Drives could be used to save info. Users would be able to check out Verizon cards.
What is everyone else doing about this situation / problem? Synchronizing virtual desktops through the Local Mode client is not an option as we aren't going to have the time to do this.
