View 4 desktop + microphone

Some of my users now require the use of microphones for a new application but the VM does seem to pic up the device.

Can someone please point me in the right direction to get this configured?

Thanks in advance

JB

First of all,

In order for Microphone to work in view 4 desktop you have to:

- either have a microphone which is connected through USB

- or as a virtual desktop (guest OS) should be Windows 7 or Windows Server 2008 R2

From information gathered about RDP protocol in newest version (7.0) support for bidirectional audio (e.g. microphone) works only with Windows 7 and Windows Server 2008 R2. With earlier version of RDP protocol you can not used normal (mini-jack) microphone because it is not supported through this protocol.

So if you are interested in desktop solution. It will work only with:

Windows 7 Enterprise albo Ultimate

Microphone can work on RDP protocol with additional software which enables microphone to work. But it is gonna cost you more.

Software solutions:

please read the follwing:

http://www.10zig.com/faq/downloads/View_4_to_PCoIP_zero_Client_Optimization_issue.pdf

“Audio input (microphone) is not yet supported in VMware View 4.0. Audio output (speakers) is supported.”

and:

"RDP doesn't support bi-directional audio. You will need to use a USB headset/soundcard in conjunction with View USB device forwarding to use a microphone within the desktop."

Here you can find how tu set up service for bidirectional audio:

Thanks for the detailed reply. Much appreciated. I know you mentioned RDP a lot in the reply but I was looking to use RDP only really (if possible)

Just so that I am clear on this I can.

Use a USB Microphone, and this will allow me to use PCoIP and Windows XP

or

A traditional input in\out microphone with PCoIP with Windows 7

is that correct?

We stopped our testing when it came out that with RDP it can work with only under Windows 7.

From my own expirience I have managed to run on guestOS (Windows XP) a USB Camera but could not run microphone in this camera. For this I use PCoIP. I did not digg the topic deep enough to solve the problem with not working microphone because in my company essentail is network throughput and RDP use much less than PCoIP.

So I only now in theory from network searching (google) that it is possible to connect microphone over usb to such system as Windows XP when using PCoIP protocol. Post an info if you manage to run it.
