I have been beating my head on this all day. I have looked hi and low and I cannot come up with the answer. I have created my master image and installed vmware tools, and vmview agent. i have cloned to template and prepared a customization file. When I go to create a desktop pool, the machines are provisioned fine, but they time out during customization. When I look i vcenter at the machines that are provisioned, they are stuck at the mini setup waiting on anwsers. There is a c:\sysprep folder and sysprep.xml file on the VM's, but mini setup never completes on its own by naming the machine and joining the domain. What am I doing wrong?
This is the end of my setupact.log file in c:\windows\panther\UnattendGC folder. I had concerns about the [IMAGE_STATE_UNDEPLOYABLE] --> [IMAGE_STATE_COMPLETE] but could not find any information on this. There are no other indicators in the system logs as to why if fails.
Are you using the guest customization specification option available in VMware or did you do the sysprep stuff yourself?
I am using the os customization from vmware.
Do you get the same result if you deploy from a template in vCenter and use that same customization?

So , please ensure following
1. FOR XP , Ensure that you have configured Volume License Key, and copied proper sysprep files into vCenter Servers's sysprep directory.
2. The Custom spec has the entry check "Create New SID"
3. The DNS and Network configuration in custom spec/master image can resolve the domain that selected during pool create wizard (not the one mentioned in the sysprep file)
4. For Win Vista or later , configure the master image with KMS license.
If things doesn't go well after all these , let us know whether deployment through vCenter is OK or not using same sysprep file.

Hey, did you ever find out the solution to this problem? I'm having the same issue, but my situation is just a little different. I'm trying to create a 2008 R2 server from a template I created in vcenter (4.1) and I've created a customization spec for it, and when I'm trying to create a new vm from template it's hanging at the "Setup is Preparing your Computer for First Use."
Looking at the setupact.log file, it's sitting at the last entry: SetupSQM is finished just like yours. I do have the error Failed to Install Product Key like you as well, but I kind of thought that may not be the problem since the log keeps going past that entry, so that makes me think that it's just continuing to process. (but obviously not, because it's sitting here.)
I'm using a MAK key, don't know if that's the problem or not, but I don't have a KMS server, so that's why I'm using a MAK key.
Any ideas would be great. Thanks!
Bump,
If there is any resolution to this issue, I would be greatly appreciated to hear it.
Thanks.
