View 4.6 - No More Browser Based Access for Clients?

From what I can see 4.6 no longer allows browser based access to a published desktop. Is this accurate? We are in the process of migrating from version 4.0 for latest IE support. Appears all that is available now is a client side application that tunnels clients through the web.

Just wanting to make sure I'm not missing something. This will involve us having to recreate our installation and setup information for our home based users who do not use company owned machines - since the setup process is now more complex than earlier versions (from an end-user's perspective).

Thanks

yes browser access is no longer applicable for view 4.6; but then previously the browser access it's just a form of automatic installation of the client only ..

Understood. Just that previous installation mechanisms made it much more simple for the users installing from systems outside the company network (very simple and straight forward).

What is involved with distributing the thin client with pre-configured settings?

you can add additional syntax to launch the client, with that in place you can preconfigured the IP. http://www.vmware.com/pdf/view-46-administration.pdf page 335

If you use a browser that supports HTML5, then you can use Ericom's AccessNow HTML5 Client for VMware View (Beta).  This client allows you to access your VMware View virtual desktops from any HTML5-compatible web browser (Firefox, Google Chrome, Safari, etc.).  It does not require any additional plug-ins, add-ons or installation of any kind on the end user device.  The client runs on Windows, Linux, Mac and Chrome OS netbooks, desktops, laptops and thin clients.

All you need to try the beta is:

- An HTML5-compatible browser

- Link to a web page

- Computer name of the VMware View server

- Hit “Connect” and the virtual desktop will appear within the browser – not in a separate window

For more information about this solution, and to download the beta, go to:

Adam,

that's pretty cool. If I'm being honest though, VMware should include this capability in their next version of View. Everything shouldn't have to be third party

Hi Adam, any chance this will support PCOIP as well?

Hi,

Ericom has developed a new remote display protocol for AccessNow called Ericom HTML Display Protocol (HDP). This protocol differs from Microsoft Remote Desktop Protocol (RDP) and PCoIP in key ways. Ericom HDP was designed to work on top of WebSocket, which is the new communication mechanism introduced in HTML5 for high-performance, bi-directional, full-duplex communications channels, over a single TCP socket. HDP also optimally integrates with JavaScript and the new HTML5 canvas component for image rendering in the browser. RDP and PCoIP are binary protocols, and therefore, cannot be transmitted as-is on top of WebSocket, which is a textual protocol.

In addition, PCoIP high efficiency stems to a great degree from the use of its own proprietary image formats and image processing techniques. None of the major browsers currently support these proprietary image formats, which prevents the implementation of a PCoIP HTML5 client.
